Cody Ko - Making Vines

There’s not much to Cody Ko’s Vine-making. There’s no director or producer. It’s just him in the car with what he calls “a dumb idea.” He’s the one in the fancy black Mazda 3 talking to himself. He downloaded the app on day one. “I didn’t really get it at first,” he says. “It wasn’t until I started getting into the content other people were making that I was like, this is actually really fun.”
It helped that he didn’t really have anything else better to do. He’d just moved out to California after college and he didn’t know anyone in the entire time zone. “I had no friends and I lived alone,” he says. “Making Vines was a way I could talk to myself without feeling like I was crazy. It was really just a bonus that I could make things that a lot of people thought were funny.”
More than 1.5 million followers later, not all that much has changed. “I wake up, go for a run, go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed.” Just recently, he’s expanded his act from his car to the stage, doing standup and sketch comedy shows. “I just want to keep making people laugh,” he says, though now he’s not so alone.
